Mississippi Baptist Convention — thank you for the reminder

mississippi-life-displayThe Mississippi Baptist Convention a built a memorial to the 50,000,000 members of the lost generation since 1973 and the Roe v. Wade ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court that allowed the killing of babies in the womb. This is 50,000,000 pennies, each one representing the death of an unborn child. Some impressive visual illustration as the 36th Anniversary of the Roe Decision approaches in January. The story:

Jackson, MS (LifeNews.com) — Ever wanted to know what 50 million pennies looks like? A group of pro-life advocates in Mississippi found out as they collected 50 million of the coins for a unique memorial to mark the deaths of unborn children since Roe v. Wade allowed unlimited abortions in 1973. CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING

Addressing Post-Modern Americans with the Authentic Gospel

Several days ago I reflected on some notes I had taken at an SBTS trustee meeting in April of 2000. The notes were from the presidential address to the trustees by Dr. Albert Mohler. Dr. Mohler listed “10 Challenges Facing the Church in the 21st Century” that we would be wise to take notice of and seek to confront. Over the next several weeks, I want to address each of these, briefly, in this blog.

The first one states that the church must “Address Post-modern Americans with the authentic Gospel. What is meant by “Post-modern Americans”? Post modernism is a philosophical vision that has filtered into the mainstream of America and sadly into many churches. It says that there is no absolute truth, that all things are relative and of one’s own belief system. In the 1960s, for instance, if you asked the general public about who would go to heaven, most people would say “Christians.” Today, the answer is likely to be “any good person” or in some instances “everybody.” A couple of weeks ago in an edition of the Kentucky Baptist paper, the Western Recorder, there is a front page headline that reads, “Study finds belief that heaven open to nearly everyone.” This study was conducted by Baylor University (a former Baptist college in Texas). Rodney Stark, who helped conduct the study says, “I think that it’s really just a broadening because of the cultural experiences of diversity.” (Say what?) That expresses a basic tenet of Post-modernism, that truth is determined by one’s experience and that truth does not stand on its own. Of course, Christianity denies this. Christianity says that truth is determined by the God who created and sustains His universe.

How has the church handled this challenge in the past decade? In far too many cases, it has merely capitulated to the thinking of the day. The clear Gospel, the authentic Gospel, has not been the mainstay of much preaching. There has been a warm, fuzzy type of preaching that is really just moralism . . . be good, be happy, because that’s what God wants for you. There must be a return to a clear proclamation of God’s Gospel, not man’s. What is the authentic Gospel? Well, it is simple, but deep in its application. I like the one sentence definition that John Piper gave a year or so ago: “The Gospel is the news that Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over all his enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy. Now that is Good News!! That is a good summation of the authentic Gospel. Paul stated it pretty clearly in 1st Corinthians 15:1-4 — Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

That, my friend, is the full Gospel, the authentic Gospel, and the Gospel that we must proclaim to our generation.

A Prayer for America on Election Day

al-mohlerToday my friend, Dr. R. Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theologicalpr129280 Seminary, posted on his blog a very solid and insightful article entitled A Prayer for America on Election Day. Click on the link to read the entire post on his blog. Here are his main points:

1. We should pray that God will bless America with leaders better than we deserve.

2. We should pray that Americans will be motivated to fulfill the responsibilities of citizenship, yet also that we will be stripped of an unhealthy and idolatrous confidence in the power of government to save us.

3. We must pray that Americans will vote by conscience, not merely on the basis of celebrity or emotion.

4. We must pray that Americans will vote to defend the least among us — and especially those who have no vote.

5. We should pray that God will prick the conscience of the nation on issues of morality, righteousness, and respect for marriage as the central institution of human civilization.

6. We should pray that God will protect these candidates and their families.

7. We should pray that the election is conducted with honor, civility, respect and justice.

8. We must pray that Americans will be prepared to accept the results of the election with respect and kindness.

9. We should pray that this election would lead to even greater opportunities to preach the Gospel, and that the freedom of the church will be respected, honored, and protected.

10. We must pray for the church, praying that the church of the Lord Jesus Christ would be strengthened in the truth, grounded in the faith, and empowered for witness and ministry.

He closes with this: “May God bless American, not because this nation deserves to be blessed, but because He is a God of grace and mercy. Oh God . . . save us from ourselves.”

This is just a skeleton . . . read the entire article at AlbertMohler.com

John Piper also has a post of a prayer for Election Day . . . read it HERE.

Today’s the day . . .

i-voted1Today I cast my vote for life, marriage, and freedom. I fear that all three are in peril if this nation dramatically turns left.

How Sweet It Is!!!

I know this is a bit “off subject” from the normal posts on this site. But hey, it has been a long time coming to see the Tide back at #1. I know we still have three games to go, and two of those involved Tigers, but for now, it is just sweet to savor the return of the Tide.

A Day to Remember — October 31 (1517)

491 years ago today was a day that changed the course of the church for all time. On that day Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenburg Chapel. His desire was to begin a debate about abuses that he saw by the Papacy and the church. He had no intention on beginning a new church or even a movement. He simply wanted to see the church “reformed” that is re-formed by God’s word and in the image of Christ.

While the abuses may not be the same as they were in Luther’s day, the church today had departed from the pure Gospel message in many ways. There are many abuses where the church has watered down, distorted, and simply denied the Gospel. We have been content to let “little” errors enter without challenge thinking that a little error won’t do much harm. But it has and today the church is in as great a need of re-forming as it was in Luther’s day. What if you received a letter from your drinking water provider that said, “we have had a little problem with our water filtration system and some of the sewage from the treatment plant has gotten into the water supply. But the good news is that it is only 10% and 90% of your water is still pure.” You would be outraged. Yet, every day we allow the “sewage” of false teaching to enter into the church and think that it won’t hurt anything. How wrong we are.

Out of the Reformation came five “battle” cries. These expressed the basics of the Gospel for their day. They have not changed over the past 491 years . . . indeed over the past 2000 years . . . though we sometimes forget them or we let little errors push them aside. In 1998 as we dedicated a new campus of the church I pastored back then, we used these five “alones” (or Solas) for a dedication Bible Conference. Today we need to remember their importance as we remember the Reformation.

Sola Scripture — By Scripture Alone

It is through the Scriptures, the Bible, that God speaks today. The Bible is not just a book that somehow contains God’s word, but rather it is God’s Word! It is in His word, with the enlightenment and guidance of the Holy Spirit, that we find God’s will, His purposes and His requirements for our lives.

While we believe that denominational traditions and church history are important and should be known and studied, it is God’s Word, the Scriptures, where we find our ultimate and absolute authority.

2 Tim 3:16 -17All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Psalm 19:7The Lord of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Solo Christo — By Christ Alone

We live in a day which cries for diversity and tolerance. Thus, when people hear a church or group claiming that there is “only one way” to a relationship with God they appear to be horrified. However, the Word of God is quite clear on this matter. Jesus Christ himself left very little doubt as to where salvation is to be found.

John 14:6 — Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.

Acts 4:12 — “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.”

We believe and proclaim that there is no salvation, no relationship with God, apart from the person and work of Jesus Christ. His death was as a substitute and sacrifice taking away our sin and giving us His righteousness. In reality, He did for us what we could not do for ourselves. He died in our place the death that we deserved.

Sola Gratia — By Grace Alone

Man is notorious for wanting to “do it for themselves” – no matter what the “it” is. The Gospel teaches us that in the matter of salvation and being right with God, there is absolutely nothing that man or woman can do for themselves. Man is in rebellion toward God and will never seek God according to Romans 3:

Romans 3:11 — THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;

If it were left up to man to “get saved” it would simply never happen. The good news is that God has determined to save a people for His glory. The Holy Spirit, in drawing men and women to Christ, demonstrates that salvation is totally of grace. It is only because of this grace that anyone will ever be saved.

John 6:44 — “No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.

John 6:37 — “All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.

Sola Fide — By Faith Alone

The core, or fundamental truth, of the Gospel is that justification, being made right with God, is not on the basis of works, that is, anything we have done, but rather by faith in Christ alone.

Eph 2:5-8 — even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), (6) and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, (7) in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (8) For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Salvation does not involve being as good as you can be . . . obeying all the 10 Commandments . . . or living by the Golden Rule. Salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ alone.

We acknowledge that when true faith is exercised in Christ there will be a change in life. New attitudes and actions follow faith in Christ. But this is the work of Christ in us, not our work for Him.

Soli Deo Gloria — To God Alone belongs the Glory

What does a person say when they have come to faith in Christ? The only proper response is “Thank you God!!” Too often men try and claim the glory, the credit, that belongs only to God. However, the Word of God clearly declares that God alone is worthy of worship, praise, and adoration.

Who should receive the glory for what we gain in this life? God should, because it is only by His grace that we have anything at all.

1 Corinthians 6:20 — For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

1 Peter 4:16 — but if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not feel ashamed, but in that name let him glorify God.

Job 1:21 — And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

This is indeed a day of celebration . . . and also a day to call for a new reformation in the 21st century. It is time to see that these 5 solas are the foundation for the church to be formed in the image of Christ. The following was the sign erected (though it no longer stands) and became the church logo and expressed that we were standing on a solid foundation — the foundation of God’s word and Jesus Christ.

10 Challenges Facing the Church in the 21st Century

Back in April, 2000, I attended a Trustee Meeting at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Back then I was a trustee from Florida, not Kentucky. During that meeting Dr. Mohler, in his address to the trustees talked about “10 Challenges Facing the Church in the 21st Century.” It was prophetic back then and was right on target as to what the church must give itself to if it wants to be a voice for the Gospel in our generation.

As I reflected on these “10 Challenges”, which I haven’t read in more than eight years, I couldn’t help but notice that they reflect exactly what we are trying to do at Grace Baptist Church. We are committed to the authentic Gospel, to truth, to recovering Biblical worship and a focus on missions from Somerset and to the world. I couldn’t help but notice while reading #9 that we are involved in the study of Christian disciplines in our adult Sunday School classes this quarter; and #8 reflects our desire to save and strengthen the family.

1. Addressing Post-modern Americans with the authentic Gospel

2. Cultivating a people of truth in a culture of relativism.

3. Preaching the unchanging word in a time of increasing flux.

4. Recovering Biblical worship against a world sold on entertainment.

5. Contending for the faith in a day of pervasive accommodation.

6. The challenge of being the children of light in the midst of the children of darkness.

7. Challenging a new generation of leadership in ministry.

8. Salvaging the family from cultural destruction.

9. Living the Christian disciplines in an era of “do-it-yourself” spirituality.

10. Building a missiology worldview that is centered in the glory of God.

May God strengthen His church to stand firm in this day and seek to face these challenges with the truth of God’s Word. In my weekly Grace Notes article I have been expounding on these each week. I will probably post some of those here in days to come.

For an analysis of today’s cultural situation that the church is facing, I recommend Dr. Mohler’s book Culture Shift: Engaging Current Issues with Timeless Truth.

It is Well With My Soul — One of my favorites!!

What if you had received this telegram? The words of the telegram are simple yet startling: “Saved alone. What shall I do. Mrs Goodwin, children, Willie Culver lost. Go with Lorriaux until answer. Reply Porclain 64 Rue Aboukin, Paris”

These were the words that Horatio Spafford received when he lost his children in a tragic shipwreck as his family was sailing for Europe on vacation. He was supposed to be with them but business caused Spafford to have to return home before they boarded the ship. He had his family go ahead and told them he would come as soon as the business was finished. Before he could leave America this telegram arrived and there was nothing he could do.

Spafford was a man of deep faith in Christ. He immediately set out to sail to Europe to be with his grieving wife and to begin putting his broken life and dreams back together again. As he sailed to meet up with his wife the ships captain called him to the bridge of the ship and told him that they were at that time passing over the spot where his daughters had perished days earlier. He went back to his quarters, and taking a piece of letterhead from a hotel in Chicago which he had in his possession, he penned the words to the great Christian hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul.” Below is a copy of the original of that hymn which was penned:

The words:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

A great hymn . . . filled with truth and borne out of tragedy. May God make Himself clear to us in times of trouble through which we pass.

Training in the Truth

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to attend leader training for Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have gone to the “latest, greatest” program only to leave with a sense of having wasted a whole day for nothing. So I had some reservations as I went to the training in the early morning, fearful that it would be just one more “program” designed to make shallow Christians feel good about their shallowness. I am happy to say my fears were totally unfounded. The content is solid and not your usual “Sunday School fluff” that has so often permeated Christian productions. This is really good stuff!! It is the kind of basic, but not shallow, training that is desperately needed in our churches today.

This is not an evangelistic apologetics course. This is a course designed to help the church become stronger by total worldview training. It is not your typical “culture war” stuff, it is solid foundational training to strengthen Christians. The end result should be that Christians and churches will become better equipped for evangelism by understanding truth as it relates to all areas of life.

I like the way the website answers the question: “What is the Truth Project?”“The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum designed to build a systematic and comprehensive biblical worldview in the lives of believers. Each lesson looks at life from a biblical perspective, studying the very nature and character of God and how He has revealed Himself to us.”

We will be using The Truth Project at Grace Baptist to help strengthen our body to be all that God has called us to be. I encourage you to consider it also. Take a look for your self at The Truth Project.

We Must Never Forget !!!

September 11, 2001 was one of the darkest days in the history of our nation. The horrible attack, on our soil, by Islamic Terrorists, took the lives of 3,000 people on that day. Some in the media believe that the images of that day should not be shown on TV or in the media. They claim that it will incite strong feelings against the terrorists. Well, I think we need to be reminded over and over . . . we must never forget that fateful day.
